I AM A MAN

from 100.00

I Am a Man! is a declaration of civil rights often used as a personal statement and as a declaration of independence against oppression.

I first saw the pictures from the Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike (1968) about 15 years ago, and I knew I would someday it would make it's way into my art. I loved the simple yet powerful message and I really liked that the movement wasn't started by civil rights leaders, but workers, sanitation workers. I saw these men as my father, my uncles...me. Later Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr joined the struggle and was known as his last stand.

It's crazy that right after I finished these, people where protesting with the same "I AM A MAN" posters in 2014 during the Michael Brown shooting protests in Ferguson, Mo. The fact that the message is timeless is why it stuck with me all this time, I AM A MAN, applies to immigration crisis, same sex marriage, the homeless and on and on.

I AM A MAN.
